Iugulatus: Call of the horned god

21/03/11  ||  Habakuk

Black/death from Poland has built quite a reputation with me, so I’m always happy to check out new stuff in the same vein. At least on paper. However, walking on the thin line between black and death, the folks in Iugulatus lean a good deal too much to the black side of things for my liking, which translates into a lot of those frvstbvtten disharmonic guitar leads and mini-melodies so proficiently used (and underlined by blastbeats) by the likes of Immortal and so forth. I am massively bored by this. Especially when most of the songs are about 7 minutes long on average. Yawn metal.

There are some death metal influences in the punchy, bass-heavy production (compared to pure black metal, mind you, not compared to Behemoth or the likes), vocals that go for a lower growl with some raspy black leanings and a select few riffs that deviate from the black metal spectrum a bit, but that’s pretty much it.

Now am I not being a bit unfair, comparing everything against my death metal standards? These guys are simply doing their thing which doesn’t happen to appeal to me. Well my dear Przyjaciele, don’t advertise it as black/death, but call it what it is – black metal – and I won’t touch it with a ten-foot pole and leave you alone.

Even then, though. I reckon black metal is a genre that’s about atmosphere. And you know what’s a first-class atmosphere killer? Cheese. More specifically, repeated “I hate you, I wanna keell you!” shouts. Or repeated “I will eat you when you die!” shouts. Or repeated “I am de chosen one! I am de child ooooof Chaos!” shouts. Work on those and more black metallers will like you. I won’t, but that’s okay. Lost cause. Miło było was poznać, dear Poles.
